Fresh Manna

It was another Monday, the day I do my best to set aside for the Lord. Our weekends are so busy with family and church obligations that I find I don’t have sufficient quiet time to hear from God.

As I sat down and partially reclined in my “prayer chair,” the peace of the Lord came. What a joy to be able to read His Word, pray in solitude, worship, and be free to listen to His voice.

On this particular Monday He showed me a pretty red, vintage enamel Dutch bread box, which is still in my family today. The lid opened and a small white dove flew out.

That was it, and the vision closed. Lord, what is the message You want to impress upon us today?

Jesus is the bread of life, and bread also represents the Word of God. Red can symbolize how much Jesus loves us by shedding His blood on the cross for us. Both of these sustain us spiritually.

It intrigues me that the bread box has been in my family for years. The fact that it’s so old shows me that Jesus is faithful through all the generations. He’s always provided for us. The Holy Spirit is depicted in the Bible as a dove. He is our helper and advocate throughout our life’s journey. When the dove flew out of the box, it showed us that God’s peace, comfort, and guidance were released. The dove in the vision was small, and sometimes God speaks to us with a still, small voice.

I believe spending intimate time with Jesus, soaking in His presence and in His Word, is the key to hearing His voice and receiving fresh insight into the Scriptures that have been stored there all along. We can find great comfort knowing God will open up fresh manna or spiritual nourishment for our lives when we seek Him this way.
